Choices- Who We Are and What We Value

Ahh- quiet time. I have put my son to bed and rest in the silence of the evening. The time has come for me to decide what I am going to do for the rest of my day. Do I watch Netflix, or a podcast, or maybe a YouTube video? We are bombarded with choices throughout the day… most of them we make without even realizing it. Whether you hit snooze on your alarm clock for the fifth time, what you had for breakfast this morning, these are only small examples of the many choices we make throughout the day. I wonder, do you choose to spend time with God? Do you put God as a priority in your day? Not like a checklist item, we’ve all done that before. I mean, out of all the things you could do, study, or read, is God your first choice? Today we will be talking about three things: our choices, who we are because of our choices, and the result of those choices.

Psalm 16 verse 5 says, “The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure”. When we choose to accept Christ into our lives, we declare that we reject earthly idols and are only satisfied in God alone. He becomes our lifeline. None of our earthly possessions can bring the same comfort that only Christ can give us. The cup that refreshes and sustains us is the Lord. We know that by choosing God, we find happiness, fulfillment, joy, and life in Him alone.

Another verse I like relating to our choices comes from Luke 10 when Jesus is visiting Martha and Mary. Martha is running around the house trying to set the table and make everything presentable for her Lord while Mary is at the feet of Jesus worshiping him. Jesus says, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her”.  Are we being Mary’s or Martha’s? It is easy to get caught up in the moment and be distracted or anxious by our seemingly never ending to-do list. Remember, we have the good and lasting portion! God gives peace and strength to those who choose to rest in Him.

When we choose to put our lives into God’s hands, the Holy Spirit gives us peace and strength. Our lives start changing from the inside out! The fruits of the spirit start to blossom inside of us and we begin to live out the fruits. We are loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle, and have self control. I don’t know about you, but when I choose to spend time resting in God throughout the day, I’m just a happier and more joyful person! What we choose to do determines the sweetness of our life with Christ. If God is our cup and portion, then our lives will be a breathing reflection of that. How can we not proclaim the excellencies of God when we are his chosen ones?

As someone who spends an embarrassing amount of time on my phone, I need this probably more than you do. The concept of choices and prioritizing important things is a struggle for me, and I, more often than not, choose Netflix over my Bible. I find myself in situations like Martha, running to get one thing after another checked off my to-do list all the while ignoring the most necessary and important thing: spending time with my Savior. God is my portion, in Him I have everything I need. In Him alone I find my identity. I just need to choose that over everything else pinning for my attention. We are in a battle everyday, what side will you choose?
